Their range of talent mark Elucidate as one of America’s top trance acts. Having worked in the music industry for years, Sean Beckwith and Ken Loi immediately began to make waves in the trance scene upon forming Elucidate in 2004. Their early productions straight away began to receive nods from some of the worlds most respected DJ’s; while on the mixing side of things, their very first demo mix landed them on the world’s largest trance radio station, Digitally Imported.

The duo began to build on this early success following up their first released mix for DI.fm with a succession of now famous mixes entitled the “Lucid Dream Mix Sets”. With each new mix their popularity grew on Digitally Imported and around the world. Eventually, Elucidate joined the star studded DI roster with their own radio show called “Deep In Vocal Euphoria” or DIVE. With the advent of their own radio show, Elucidate was now given the opportunity to share the decks with major trance DJ’s from around the globe as guests on DIVE. Past DIVE guests read like a who’s who of the trance scene with names such as Sean Tyas, Alex M.O.R.P.H., Woody van Eyden, Aly & Fila, Andy Moor, Kenneth Thomas, and Matias Lehtola. Plus, with the massive success of their radio show, Elucidate began to receive invitations to guest mix on numerous other radio shows internationally as well. These guest appearances placed them on the decks alongside such artists as Paul Van Dyk, Joop, Mike Koglin, Gabriel Batz, and Suzy Solar. Today, DIVE is syndicated on 7 different stations globally, and reaches close to 10,000 listeners each broadcast.

While their radio show was growing in popularity, Elucidate was concurrently busy in the studio. Emerging from the Elucidate studio came several remixes and original tracks which garnered praise and support from leading trance artists such as Armin van Buuren, Airbase, Andy Moor, Kenneth Thomas, Suzy Solar, Dyloot, and Elsa Hill. Their first release: “Artificial Dreamer feat. Catherine – It was You (Elucidate Remix)”, was signed to Ampire Digital Recordings and received support from numerous DJ’s including Armin van Buuren. This remix was subsequently followed by several class productions which caught the eye of a number of other labels, and helped them land remix work for the likes of Summer Channel, Nelly Furtado, and Kosheen.

Beyond their work in the studio and on the radio, Elucidate is amazing to catch live. Mixing at all times in tandem, the two DJ’s work flawlessly together to create sets that are nothing short of spectacular. Combining energy behind the decks with a pure love of the music they play, an Elucidate set creates a sensation comparable to nothing else.

German duo Cosmic Gate have been key figures in the tougher end of trance music for many years now. Last year’s critically acclaimed ‘Earthmover’ album kick-started a new direction for their sound, and that has carried on to massive remixes like Tenisha – Outsiders and Vincent de Moor – Fly Away, plus their new single ‘Body Of Conflict’. With a new mix album released today on Black Hole Recordings, we caught up with the guys for a chat about their current sound, and the demise of hard trance…

Hi guys, I’m looking out the window, it’s grey, wet and miserable, the leaves are falling off the trees – same story where you are?

We just went upstairs from the studio to be sitting in the living room to do this interview, and believe it or not, the sun is shining, only the temperature is pretty low already here in Krefeld, Germany. So actually no complaints bout the weather from our side…

Sorry for the weather question, us British people love talking about it. Anyway, music. The latest track to emerge from the Cosmic Gate studios is ‘Body Of Conflict’, essentially a vocal version of ‘Element Of Life’ from your Earthmover album. What made you decide to add a vocal to that track and how did it develop into ‘Body Of Conflict’?

Element of Life actually is one of our favourite tracks on the album, but we had the feeling that it could even be stronger adding some vocals on top. We hooked up with the songwriter duo Raz Nitzan and Sir Adrian again, (they had already written the lyrics for the Earth Mover album tracks “A Day That Fades” and “Mile In My Shoes”) and they introduced Denise Rivera’s vocals to us. We liked her voice a lot, so they recorded the vocals with her, and sent it to us. We finally added the vocals on “Element of Life”, only giving some small changes to the base line, created also a dub version, and finally produced a complete new club mix, to have a bit more of a pounding mix as well.

You also have a brand new mix album coming out, “Back 2 Back 3”. Tell us a bit more about that, what sounds and styles we can expect to hear. Is it a fair reflection of a Cosmic Gate set?

Yes, you are absolutely right, that is what we actually want to show on Back 2 Back 3, a true reflection of the styles we play in our sets! Of course every set is different and a one hour show you can not compare to an “all nighter” set, but Back 2 Back 3 for sure gives a good idea of the style we play these days!

Were there any arguments between you two over the tracklisting?

The good thing is, that actually our opinions about tracks most of the time are very similar, it kind of never happens that one of us loves a track and the other one says its total crap or so. That’s why there were no arguments at all, the only thing we sometimes do, is to ask the other one, to listen to a track again. Cause if you listen to new music for hours and hours, it can happen that even good tracks are not getting recognized as these, because the concentration is getting lower…

You’ve done a new mix of “Fire Wire” on the album. Why did you think the time was right to re-visit that track? Did you ever get sick of fans asking for it?

We had the feeling that with the beats we do these days, especially the main “stab sound” of Fire Wire could fit quiet well. The second idea behind this, was to have a new version of Fire Wire for some of our DJ sets, as “older” recordings in general start sounding to different to the standard of 2007, which in our eyes is also a reason for all these new “bootleg” versions of old tracks. DJs just make them to sound more up to date!

Tying up with Black Hole Recordings must be good for you, do you think that reflects your more mature sound and do you think it will open you up to new fans?

We have been releasing for two years on Black Hole already now, and yes it’s true, we think that the sound we create these days fits better with a label like Black Hole, then it would have done with maybe staying at a major company like EMI, where we released our tracks for the first years. And of course a good label like Black Hole helps getting attention, but in the end it is only the music that counts helping to find new fans, and we hope we did well in that!

You live near the Dutch border and you seem to be becoming more aligned with the Dutch trance scene now, does this reflect the strength of the Dutch scene or the failings of the German one?

Maybe a little bit of both, even as we have to say that the “German Trance” scene in our eyes is doing pretty good again, thinking of some very strong producers coming out of Germany these days. We actually always had good contacts to the Dutch scene already, also many of our DJ gigs happened in Holland, and that’s why for us it is also kind of logic to release our tracks there. Also do not forget, all major cities in Holland are less then half way drive comparing going to Berlin, the only thing we actually do not like about driving in the Netherlands is the annoying speed limit they have..!

Why do you think the once great German hard trance sound has gone down the toilet?

It is not only the German hard trance sound that got down the drain, hard trance in general is dead these days… why it happened we do not know, maybe there were too many bad productions, maybe some producers developed the hard trance sound into hardstyle and some moved into more deeper and trancier sounds, no idea… some people still produce tracks like in these “hard trance days” but for us this would not be interesting anymore to create the same kinda music, we feel it is important to work on different sounds, cause we would just feel bored to produce exactly the same kind of music for years and years.

How come you two have managed to maintain your production partnership while so many of your contempories are going their own way?

Well, we have always been doing other things near Cosmic Gate, that’s why it actually never got boring or so, and what is also important, we always had, and still have the same idea about what Cosmic Gate is, either in production and also in our DJ sets. Like in real life, it can happen also in the music business that people start developing in different directions, but we fortunately have not, and we are pretty sure that it will stay like this!

Claus, you have your Nic Chagall solo project. Did you expect it to take off in the way it has and what new releases can we expect from Nic Chagall?

No, I’ve never expected this and am really flattered by all these great reactions I’ve got. It’s so much fun, to do solo-work beside Cosmic Gate and the cooperation with Dick de Groot from Be Yourself Music/High Contrast Records, who is releasing my solo singles, is absolutely enriching for me. In the last few weeks I did some new remixes for the new singles of Marcel Woods and Markus Schulz. Next will be finally to start with the production of a new single.

Stefan, do you have any plans to push your own solo career in the way Claus has?

There are no real plans for it at the moment, but I also would not say that there is no solo singles of mine at all in the future, we see what time will bring here. What most people do not know, beside Cosmic Gate I have quiet some work to do with the label “Phunkwerk”, that I run together with DJ Delicious. I’m also involved in some of the productions there, for example last year’s big hit “Same Man” from DJ Delicious & Till West, so enough work besides Cosmic Gate indeed.

Can you see you both having solo careers pulling Cosmic Gate apart?

Actually we do not think so, as Cosmic Gate has a very high priority for us, and for people that might worry, when we play solo sets the sound is still the same, only difference is that there is one guy mixing behind the decks, and not two!

Although many fans love your new sound, a lot miss the old hard trance Cosmic Gate. Do you get many messages from fans who want the old ‘Gate back and what do you say to them?

Of course there are fans that let us know that they miss the old Cosmic Gate sound, but on the other side, like you said, there is even more people saying that they love the sound we do these days. We only can say, that the times we live in now are just different then few years back, and during these years, also music has to develop in a certain way, and as artists we just would not feel comfortable producing the same music over and over again. We are sorry that some people do not like our current sound as they liked the old sound, but at first we have to produce what we feel comfortable with, cause only then we have the feeling that we do our best!

How does the Cosmic Gate sound develop from here?

That’s a good question, but hard to answer. Our tracks now might be slower then years ago, but in our eyes they are still pounding and bouncy, even while using more vocals and atmospheric pads on top… and that’s how it also is going to be in the future, you will always feel the Cosmic Gate punch, no matter in which direction things will turn…

How do you create that ‘Cosmic Gate punch’? There’s nothing quite like it…

Well, we always spend some time on the bass section of our club tracks, that’s actually all we can say. Bass and kick have to support each other in general, but there is no secret “bass machine” or something that we use different to other producers.

Can we expect a follow up to the Earth Mover album in the near future?

Yes, we just started building the first beats for a new album to be released next year. We are thinking about, to go even one step further with the new album comparing to Earth Mover. This means, that we want to have even more tracks on it, which you even can listen to while relaxing at home for example. In other words, we want to show an even wider range of styles, starting from chill and finally ending up on pumping club tracks, let’s see where our inspiration will lead us from here.

You will be playing B2B with Ferry Corsten at the Full On Ferry event on 27th October – three of you in the DJ box – it’s going to be quite a squeeze!

Maybe we are going to tell a secret here, but there will be three DJ boxes on stage, so we will take Ferry in the middle, and play a blasting one-hour back-to-back set, we are really looking forward to it!

Finally health freak or tasty sweets? Which one would each of you go for?

Bossi: Sometimes health freak, but also quiet often sweets, especially chocolate is a must!
Nic: Definitely tasty sweets!!!

Many thanks for your time and best of luck for the future!

Cosmic Gate’s brand new single ‘Body of Conflict’ feat. Denise Rivera is out in November in the UK on Maelstrom Records: www.maelstromrecords.com and out now on Black Hole Recordings. Back 2 Back 3 is out today on Black Hole Recordings!

Biography

Armin van Buuren chose to pursue his career as a professional musician despite the promise of a legal career in his native country of the Netherlands, where his legal studies were completed in 2004. Van Buuren started working as a DJ in a local night club called Nexus, finished high school in 1995 and went on to university to study law. Meanwhile, he moved his studio equipment from his bedroom to a ‘real’ studio. The first tracks he produced in his new studio were, among others, tracks like “Touch Me” and “Communication”. Van Buuren has been quoted as saying, “Don’t be a prisoner of your own style.” He has described his musical style as “liberating, euphoric, uplifting, melodic and energetic.”

He hosts the trance show A State of Trance. The show has completed its 300th episode in May 2007, running for over 6 years.

In October 2002, Van Buuren was voted Number 5 in the DJ Magazine 100 top DJs. The following year, he jumped up to the #3 spot, and held it strong for 3 years straight. His work left him on the #2 spot, just below Paul van Dyk in the 2006 polls.

As a producer

Armin Van Buuren has always had his own studio and works alone the majority of the time. He has never employed an engineer, claiming he does not want the music to be altered by an engineer.

Since 1995, Van Buuren has released many tracks on different labels with increasing success. His first big success was “Blue Fear” on Cyber Records. This ‘Euro Trance blueprint’ made it into the UK Chart. “Communication” was released on the same label, and had a huge impact on Ibiza, Spain in the summer of 1999. After being signed to AM PM Records, this track entered the UK Chart at #18 in 2000

In the beginning of 1999, Van Buuren started his label Armind together with United Recordings. The first release, Gig – “One”, was well received. The second release “Touch Me”, under the name Rising Star was signed to Ministry Of Sound in the UK, before the record was released

By the time of his third release, Gimmick – “Free” was signed to R&S Records, Van Buuren had managed to make his label popular very quickly. Under the surname Gaia he released “4 Elements” on Captivating Sounds, a sub-label of Warner Brothers. Teaming up with DJ Tiësto, two new projects were born: Major League – “Wonder Where You Are?” was released on Blackhole and Alibi – “Eternity” was released on Armind. “Eternity” received club and chart success and was signed to Paul van Dyk’s imprint Vandit Records. Another major collaboration followed this. Together with Ferry Corsten, Van Buuren recorded a riff-classic titled “Exhale” for the System F. album. Released as a single, this track reached gold status in less than a month.

In 2000 Van Buuren started his own AVB compilation series. He managed to find a balance between progressive, techno and trance music styles. AVB001 – “A State of Trance” (not to be confused with his weekly ASOT radio shows) sold more than 10,000 copies and contains Van Buuren’s well known remix of Moogwai – “Viola.” AVB002 “Basic Instinct” featured a new track: Perpetuous Dreamer – “The Sound Of Goodbye”. This track entered the Dutch charts in June 2001 at number 26. Later in the year the track hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play

chart. AVB003 – “In Motion” was released August 6th 2001. This album contained the real trance sound and was very popular in the US. AVB004 – “Transparance” followed in 2002.

In March 2001 Van Buuren started his own radio show on ID&T Radio. In this weekly two-hour show, entitled ‘A State of Trance‘, he plays the latest popular trance music tracks. His show and the artists he features are popularized by publishing the artists and track titles on his website. This radio-show/website combination has proven popular internationally. When ID&T Radio changed genres in 2004, Van Buuren left and took A State of Trance with him. The show then moved to Fresh FM, a Dutch radio station. It is now a weekly feature on SLAM!FM, another Dutch radio station, DI.FM, an online radio station, and on XM Satellite Radio channel 82 in the United States and Canada. A complete list of stations that broadcast ASOT can be found at the ASOT section of Armins website. Also in 2004, Van Buuren remixed the 24 Theme into a trance hit. In June 2005, the 200th episode was celebrated in Amsterdam and subsequently aired on radio. The 250th (8 hour) anniversary episode was celebrated in Club Asta in The Hague, The Netherlands, featuring Van Buuren, Jonas Steur, M.I.K.E., John Askew, Rank 1 and Menno De Jong.

On May 17, 2007, Van Buuren began broadcasting the first of a two part series of what would become his 300th espisode of A State of Trance.

He has also worked on remix projects involving tracks by Japanese superstar Ayumi Hamasaki.

As both songwriter and producer, Andre Tanneberger has been living in two worlds for quite some time. One is the world of electronic music, where he has created extraordinary, melodious club tracks and played countless DJ sets all over the globe. Worldwide fame came courtesy of numerous top ten hits such as “9 PM (Till I Come)”, “Don’t Stop”, “Killer”, “Let U Go” and “Ecstasy”. The other world is an atmospheric domain – smoother songs to lose yourself in, where you can begin to dream.

On this, his seventh album ATB has succeeded in combining the two worlds, without intermingling them unnecessarily. “Trilogy” provides the electronic and melodious ATB sound blended with a unique rock and pop crossover flavour on the first CD. The second CD, on the other hand, offers the listener 14 super smooth tracks. “Every album should have its own soul and a golden thread leading through all the songs. However, you only really feel the soul if you listen to all the songs together. If you mix up the faster and slower songs, that isn’t going to work,” explains Andre. The golden thread he is referring to has been a feature of ATB’s career to date. Punctual as ever, he delivered an album for his fans every year. “Seven years”, released in 2005, was a mixture of new songs and a retrospective “Best Of” collection. This album formed a link between the past and future of his music. In doing so, ATB was also able to break with old habits. “Bringing a new album out every year wasn’t a deliberate plan as such, it simply happened.” Last year was the first in a long time in which I did not release a new ATB longplayer. After having played gigs all over the world in 2005 and 2006 I needed a break. I had to come to terms with new influences and jettison the old sounds.”Mission accomplished – the new album presents an array of innovative styles, making use of stronger instrumentation and tools:

“In the field of dance music the ratio or influence of electronic sounds to “handmade” drums, piano and guitars is around 90/10. We wanted to break open the whole thing and go for a 60/40 split, or even 50/50. We placed great emphasis on songwriting and spent a lot of time sitting in the studio playing drums or guitar, looking for new song ideas.”

His productions have always been international in character. “I have never thought about territories as such, or composed a song that for a certain region or country. That never worked for me. I think people are the same all over the world. Club music is a worldwide phenomenon.

People in Brazil dance to the same songs as people in Tokyo, London or South Africa. Dance music is a brilliant way to connect people all over the world”.

More than ten years of making electronic music and being a DJ have changed Andre, broadening his horizons. “My productions have become more adult. “Nevertheless his heart is still in electronic music, as well as being open to pop music. “You grow up and your taste in music grows with you.” Andre thinks the same is equally true for his fans. Having grown older with him, this is exactly why they can still identify with his songs.

The title of the new album shows that ATB has not broken completely with past conventions, but still has an eye on his past. Two songs on earlier albums were named “Trilogy”. The third version on the current album is not only the eponymous song, but also the concluding link of the chain. There is also a welcome return for a world famous international artist with whom Andre has collaborated in days gone by – the new song with Heather Nova turned out so well, that it has been chosen as the first single of the new album.

ATB also worked with Jennifer Karr, Jan Loechel, Jeppe Riddervold and Karen Ires on new album tracks. You can sense the creativity that has emerged from a concentrated phase in the studio. The many nights he spent with his team and best friend “Rhudee”, designated co-producer, proved truly inspiring. Andre points out: “We had so many songs left that we could have filled another album as well.” Having patently enjoyed his time in the studio, Andre is similarly looking forward to presenting the result to his fans. An eight gig Germany tour will be followed by shows in America, Asia, across Europe and Australia.

Born December 16th, 1971 in Eisenhuettenstadt, East Germany, Paul grew up in communist East Berlin. Prior to Germany’s reunification, he at least had an early window to the capitalist world via the cross-border airwaves.

“We were able to see Westside – TV and listen to western radio stations. We recorded the music and replayed it at our parties, because in the east we didn’t have something like a club culture. In those days I listened to the radio show of Monika Dietl. I was really captivated by the music of ‘The Smiths’ and ‘New Order’. It (the music) was very strong and emotional…

Then in 1989, as the wall finally came down, a broad Club culture sprung up throughout all of Berlin. “Mainly they played that hard Detroit – Techno. I liked this energetic spirit, but something was missing. I (was looking out) for something else.”

That search would never leave him. Stemming from two crusty old turntables, the first remix tapes of his musical ideas were created. And only a bit later, in March 1991, his unique style of dance music was played for the very first time to the public at the embryonic Berlin club “Tresor”.

Around this same period, Paul also started making his own original compositions. His first production “Perfect Day”, put together with Cosmic Baby as “Visions of Shiva”, was released in 1992. “I was pleased like a little child, holding my own very first record in my hands!,… Paul remembers. “Perfect Day” was published by the Berlin underground label ‘MFS’, and launched a promising career, which aimed without pause or hesitation for the top !

In 1993 Paul created the club hit of the year with his remix of Humate’s “Love Stimulation”. The following year, his first album “45 RPM” was recorded, while he was also regularly spinning sets at the legendary club ‘E – Werk’.

Over the next few years Paul garnered further respect by remixing tracks of many renowned artists such as Inspiral Carpets, Sven Väth, Curve and New Order. This was of course until the release of his second album, “Seven Ways”, which firmly established him as one of the world’s truly great electronic artists.

‘Seven Ways’ unleashed a frenzy of national and international interviews, and many globe-roaming DJ – sets as well, as Paul was catapulted into the Top 100 – Salecharts. Even the English music media, typically protective of their own homespun DJ artists, unanimously praised the record. Readers of “DJ Magazine voted ‘Seven Ways’ as the Number 1 album of the year. Bellowing singles such as “Beautiful Place”, “Forbidden Fruit” and “Words”, featuring remixes of Salt Tank, Quattara and Curve, fully secured him a place as a major player in the British and European dancecharts.

Before the club closed, Paul became an institution at Berlin’s ‘E – Werk’, regularly spinning new musical magic, with guest appearances by fellow superstar DJ’s Nick Warren, BT, Dave Seaman and Sasha.

In 1998 his first album “45 RPM” was released in the UK, and the new remix of the single “For an Angel” attacked the worldwide dancefloors. The album buzzed for two weeks at number 1 in England and four weeks at number 1 in the German dancecharts, and also achieved major postings in the American, Australian, Dutch, Belgian and Scandinavian dancecharts.

However, Paul’s core sentiments are not as a producer, to be shuttered away in some stealthy studio, but as a performing DJ very willing to be seen, and with a deep desire to have contact with his audience, whether it be 500 people or 1.5 million…

“As I began my career as a DJ I discovered that there is a really deep communication between DJ and people. I learned to observe the different vibrations, learned how to move the crowd, and how to create atmosphere.” Paul remembers, “because while spinning, an interaction takes place between the people and me. I never come into a club and spin just a ready set. It is also a very new experience for me every time, and nobody knows in advance how it will end.”

Now he creates that experience regularly, as resident – DJ in New York’s “Twilo” club, at the acclaimed “Gatecrasher” in Sheffield, and in his hometown of Berlin.

In 1999 Paul was divorced from his former label ‘MFS’ and started up, together with his team, the new label “Vandit” Records. This label presents both Paul’s releases, as well as other new and innovative dance/DJ artists.

In England, ‘Deviant’ – Records are taking care of Paul’s creative output, whose brainstorm was the 1998 Triple – CD “Vorsprung Dyk Technik”. Combining 33 tracks, it is the most exhaustive collection of Paul’s remixes to date, containing classics like Humate’s “Love Stimulation” and Joe T. Vanelli’s “Playing with the Voice in Germany” as well as Binary Finary’s clubhit “1998″ and Paul’s own chart single “For an Angel”. A year after its release in Nov 1999, “Vorsprung Dyk Technik” was officially declared “Silver” with over 60,000 UK sales, a very rare feat indeed for a Triple – CD.

Today Paul’s touring diary is incredibly hectic with regular globetrotting stops at major venues in London, Tel Aviv, Mexico, New York and Singapore. Between all that, Berlin is always there and waiting — if not for the interviews and local club dates, then for looking after his own label, recording studio and radio show (not to mention his friends and family as well!).

“It isn’t the success or which place I take in the salecharts that is important for me. (What’s) most important are the people, the family, friends, ..and everyone, (especially) where I’ve changed something. I am really pleased when someone tells me: “Hey, by hearing your song something changed in my life!” Paul says, “I’ve never made music for being trendy or making the fat money. I make music for myself, it (the music) comes directly from my stomach, my music springs from an intense feeling. And every track has its own little story…”

We are all wishing you lots of pleasure while listening or dancing to Paul’s music, and you’ll definitely be hearing more from him on this website in the near future !

Just listen, enjoy and be inspired!
